In the heart of Pereliya, Sri Lanka, a beautiful story of hope and transformation is unfolding.

For families living in extreme poverty, everyday life can be filled with unimaginable challenges. Parents face the uncertainty of providing their next meal, children grow up without access to opportunities many of us take for granted, and mothers long for the chance to build a better future for their families.

At Kind Hearted Lankans, we believe that where someone is born should never determine how far they can go in life.

It is this belief that inspired the creation of the Pereliya Community Centre. A place where compassion becomes action, where opportunity replaces uncertainty, and where families are empowered to build a brighter future.

Nurturing Little Minds, Inspiring Big Dreams

Our centre opened its doors to 20 children from some of the most vulnerable families in the community, identified with the support of the local Grama Niladhari.

Here, children receive nutritious meals, clothing, essential learning materials and access to early childhood education.

But what we provide goes far beyond these essentials.

We are creating a safe, nurturing environment where children can laugh, learn, discover their potential and experience the simple joys of childhood. A place where every child is valued, encouraged and given the opportunity to dream beyond their circumstances.

Because sometimes, the smallest opportunities can change the course of an entire life.

Empowering Mothers, Strengthening Families

We believe that lasting change begins when families are given the tools to shape their own futures.

Through our Threads of Hope programme, mothers are learning valuable sewing and garment-making skills, opening pathways towards earning a sustainable income from home.

These women are not asking for handouts. They are seeking an opportunity — the chance to provide for their children, support their families and build a future of financial independence.

Every skill learned and every garment created represents something much greater: dignity, confidence and the possibility of a better tomorrow.

When we empower a mother, we strengthen a family. And when families thrive, entire communities flourish.

Caring for the Whole Community

Our commitment extends beyond education and economic opportunity.

In partnership with Sri Lanka's Ministry of Health, the centre hosts regular community medical clinics, providing vital healthcare services including maternal care, childhood vaccinations, family planning, counselling and mental health support.

By bringing these essential services closer to families who need them, we are helping build a healthier, stronger and more resilient community.

A Future Filled with Possibility

Our journey is only beginning.

We dream of establishing a computer lab where children can develop the digital skills that will open doors to new opportunities. We hope to expand our sewing programme, providing more mothers with the equipment and training they need to take their first steps towards financial independence.

Each new opportunity brings us closer to a future where children are not defined by poverty and families have the confidence and means to build better lives.
